This guide exists because of what comes up when you search for bagel gifts: socks, tote bags, and gadgets that get used once. Everything below passes a single test instead: it earns its place in a kitchen that actually bakes. The outside picks all come from my own kitchen. Two entries are things I make and sell, and I label them plainly where they appear. There are no affiliate links here and nobody paid for placement.
If they've never baked a bagel: the kit
The Bagel Making Kit is ours, so take that into account. It's also the best fit for the most common gift situation there is: someone who loves bagels and has never made one. The box holds the dough mix, the seasoning, the diastatic malt, the cedar boards, and the tools, with a recipe card on top, which turns a first bake into a weekend project instead of a shopping list. I'd hand it to anyone testing the hobby: sourdough bakers curious about a stiffer dough, or New York transplants chasing the bagel they left behind. For the board inside, choose Classic; it's the right board for someone who doesn't yet know how deep they'll go. And if the person you're shopping for is gluten sensitive, the Gluten-Free Bagel Making Kit is the same idea built on a gluten-free dough.
And if the kit is going under a Christmas tree, our Christmas Morning Bagel Bar plan is the first thing to bake with it.

If they bake all the time: the Signature board
Also ours. The Signature Bagel Board is my answer for the person who already bakes a lot and cares about a clean kitchen. The burlap covers snap off so the wood washes bare, and a worn cover gets replaced instead of the whole board.

The tools I use every weekend
None of these are mine and none of them pay me anything. They're what my own bagels go through, listed in the order the dough meets them.
A kitchen scale
Mine is an off-brand and it works fine, which is the point: the brand doesn't matter, the grams do. Bagel dough punishes volume measuring, and five grams of water either way shows up in the chew. Any scale that reads in grams and doesn't wobble is a good gift.
A stand mixer
The biggest item on this list is also the easiest to defend. Mine is a KitchenAid; bagel dough is stiff and dry work, and the mixer does the hard mixing while building the strength the chew depends on.
A clear proofing container
A Cambro is a restaurant-supply tub with two virtues. You can watch the dough rise through the side rather than guessing, and the surface releases the dough without a fight. It earns bench space every bake.
A proofing box
If your bagel lover complains about inconsistent batches, the fix is probably a proofing box. Dough proofs fast in a summer kitchen and slow in a winter one; the box holds one temperature so January bagels behave like July bagels. Mine is an Aurelema folding model.
Barley malt syrup
A jar of Eden Foods barley malt syrup looks like a strange gift until the first boil. A spoonful in the water is the secret ingredient behind the New York shine on a finished bagel, and it's the smallest thing on this list.
A baking steel
The steel sits under the whole operation. Its stored heat under a 450°F bake is what gives the bagel its rapid rise after the flip, and mine is a Colenza, though mass matters more than brand. Pair a steel with soaked boards and you've rebuilt a bagel-shop deck oven inside a home range.
What I'd skip
Three things get marketed hard at bagel lovers that I'd leave on the shelf.
The bagel guillotine: more work than value. Slicing a bagel is a knife's job.
Bagel molds, for boiling or baking: hard to clean and not necessary.
Jarred everything seasoning: better built from single ingredients, because most blends contain salt, which pulls moisture out of the dough surface, or pre-roasted garlic and onion that burn quickly in a real bake.
Still not sure
A gift card removes the guessing, and the for-gifts collection is the short version of our whole shop. Both beat a fourth pair of bagel socks.
